Meal Review: American Airlines Cheese Lasagna

In this post, I’ll be reviewing American Airlines’ Cheese Lasagna, served in their domestic First Class.

Let’s take a look at the details of the flight:

Route: Chicago, IL to Washington DC (Reagan)

Aircraft: Boeing 737

Meal Window: Dinner

Meal: Cheese Lasagna Topped with a Chunky Red Tomato Sauce

After take-off, the lead flight attendant came through the First Class cabin with a choice of dinner selections. On choice was a Chicken Tikka Masala or a Cheese Lasagna. I chose the lasagna since I had not had it before.

A a hot towel was offered followed by pre-dinner beverages. I ordered a Coke Zero with lime. As usual, a small ramekin of nuts was offered.

Shortly after beverage service, meal trays were distributed.

On the meal tray included:

  • A garden salad with tomatoes and cucumbers, with a cup of ranch dressing
  • Cheese lasagna with chunky tomato sauce
  • A bread basked was offered to which I chose the warmed cheese roll.

Here are my impressions of the meal:

  • The lasagna was near perfect, and was perhaps the best meal I’ve had aboard a domestic AA flight.
  • While the tomato sauce was very good, it wasn’t entirely “chunky” as the menu described.
  • The salad portion was only about 3/4 filled, so I’m guessing some of it may have spilled into the beverage cart upon loading.

Following dinner service, a warmed chocolate chip cookie was offered. This cookie was much better than the “new” AA cookie, and more resembled the old-style cookie which was fantastic. Admittedly, I wolfed down the cookie as if it was my last meal, and I was promptly offered a second one. 🙂

This has been one of my favorite meals so far – while I would have preferred a meat sauce in the lasagna, this did just fine. I’d order this again in a heartbeat, because it stood up so well to the “rigors” of airline food preparation.
