Larger Jets Coming to One of the Most Commuter Heavy Routes

I fly the Washington Reagan (DCA) to JFK route a fair amount, and coincidentally, it’s considered one of the most commuter heavy routes there is in the US, alongside the DCA to LGA flight routing.

It’s convenient for me because:

  • Reagan is my closest airport to home.
  • JFK is convenient to the Air Train to get into Manhattan.
  • JFK is convenient, via the Air Train can connect to the Long Island Railroad to get to family on Long Island.
  • JFK is a larger airport, so when flying internationally, I often choose a JFK departure point.

Up until now, there’s been a huge downside for the DCA to JFK routing on American, my preferred carrier – they flew  majority of the routes on small CRJ aircrafts, with 2×2 seating and no First Class cabin. There’s one ERJ-175 flight a direction each day, as well as one 737 flight (which is my absolute preferred flight), but if you’re departing at other times, you’re stuck on the smaller plane.

As of March 29, American Airlines will be adding more ERJ-175 aircraft to the DCA-JFK routing. The ERJ-175 features a First Class, Main Cabin Extra and Main Cabin seating. Out of the 6 flights a day, 4 now will be operated by the ERJ-175.

Schedule courtesy of airlineroutes.net:

AA4247 JFK departing at 0800 – arriving at 0921 DCA,Daily
AA4321 JFK departing at 1235 – arriving at 1356 DCA, Daily
AA4263 JFK departing at 1655 – arriving at 1816 DCA, 6x a week
AA4323 JFK departing at 1730 – arriving at 1851 DCA, 6x a week
AA4235 JFK departing at 2105 – arriving at 2226 DCA, 6x a week
AA4235 JFK departing at 2127 – arriving at 2248 DCA, 6x a week

AA4309 DCA departing at 0600 – arriving at 0716 JFK, Daily
AA4247 DCA departing at 1015 – arriving at 1135 JFK, Daily
AA4321 DCA departing at 1455 – arriving at 1611 JFK, Daily
AA4263 DCA departing at 1856 – arriving at  2012 JFK, 6x a week
AA4323 DCA departing at 1931 – arriving at 2047 JFK, 6x a week

DCA 35X

I’m really excited about the addition of these aircrafts to this route as this will bring more First Class seats and larger planes, which is always welcome.
