As the American Airlines and US Airways merger progresses, IT updates are made and website improvements done. Fortunately, this is one for the better – you can now place US Airways “metal” (s0, US Airways planes painted in the US Airways livery) flights on hold on AA.com.
Previously, this was only made available for American operated planes, and it would not give you the option to hold the reservation if a US Airways segment was included.
Here’s a return flight from Atlanta (coming back from the Freddies) for this May. You’ll see that both flights are operated by US Airways (they connect in Charlotte).
When pricing out the reservation, I’m given all payment options including the option to hold for 24 hours, for free.
I’m excited with this new benefit, since I love placing reservations on hold speculatively, until I figure out my plans!

I’ve been able to do this ever since US Airways flights were bookable with AAdvantage miles. In February 2014 I was able to put AKL-HNL-PHX-OMA on hold with no issues. AKL-HNL was on HA and HNL-PHX-OMA on US.
