New: Earn 4,000 Extra Avios With Each Long Haul Trip You Take

Update: You must be a UK resident departing from the UK to qualify.

British Airways has announced a new promotion today whereby you can earn 4,000 bonus Avios for each long-haul trip you take with them:

For a limited period only, British Airways is offering customers booking long-haul flights an extra 4,000 Avios for each return flight they take – enough to buy a one-way off-peak reward flight* to Paris, or upgrade an existing flight**.

Customers who fly on a British Airways short-haul or UK domestic flight are being offered an additional 500 Avios.

To qualify, flights must be booked between May 26 and July 14 for travel during that period. Customers will receive the additional Avios on a maximum of four return flights.

You can earn a maximum of 32,000 Avios with this offer, though if you consider the 4,000 you’ll get from each round-trip, that’s almost enough for a shortfall sub-650 mile one-way trip, which is pretty descent. You’ll have to credit your trip to British Airways for the bonus to trigger, so you’ll need to evaluate whether this makes sense crediting here or elsewhere. It also only covers flights booked and flown between May 26 and July 14, so there’s a fairly limited time period, though a good portion of that is during the heavy traffic summer months as folks get more vacation days.

The promotion does not define what a “long haul” flight is, but for safe judgement, I’d consider transatlantic, and beyond Europe flights to count. I wouldn’t go out of my way to book any trips because of this bonus, but if you’ve got something in the works and are willing to credit to British Airways, it’s a little token of appreciation.

Keep in mind that British Airways is also offering another bonus of up to 115,000 Avios, though that is for purchase First, Business and full fare Economy/Premium Economy fares only.
