Is this is the next Silvercar city? Also, DC is off the table.

As I’ve written about before, Silvercar is probably my most favorite rental car company.

They provide an all Audi A4 fleet with:

  • Fair toll tracking (breeze through tolls and pay the standard rate)
  • Pickup from the terminal
  • XM Satellite radio
  • Wifi in the car
  • Fully equipped Audi A4 with leather interior, sunroof, etc.
  • … and more.

They’ve only got a handful of locations throughout the US, and certainly aren’t in every airport or city — these guys aren’t Hertz or National, so you won’t find them as often. I wish they would expand more, and they’re certainly looking to do so.

In any event, I was in PHX last weekend and was chatting with one of the Silvercar employees and naturally the discussion turned to what the next location would be. I was informed that Orlando was next on the list, the “paperwork” was signed and the infrastructure (the building for the cars, etc.) was already in place…hmm. With that much in place, I’d consider Orlando a sure bet, if that’s in fact true.

Now, Orlando is an interesting market. It’s a huge tourist destination, and while rental of cars is high, they also have to contend with all the free shuttle services, especially those of the Disney Resort. That said, for those that plan on doing more than Disney and want to hit multiple parks, destinations, etc., a rental car is a great thing to have.

Here’s one other thing to note. Apparently, DC was high on the list at one point. It’s no longer “in the running,” apparently due to local government at the Virginia airports stepping in to collect airport taxes, even with Silvercar running an off-site shop. So, looks like DC is off the table for now, though I was told they’re still working on getting in there, if they can.

Anyways, some interesting news all around. At this point, I’d consider this strong speculation without having seen anything in writing, but I’d consider this good info for now. Stay tuned for Orlando possibly being the next Silvercar location!
