I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t have a ton of experience in “special meals,” that is, meals for those with food allergies or other medical conditions. That said, generally, airlines have procedures in place for catering these special meals on customer request, especially during long haul operations.
American Airlines is expanding their special meal program, beginning July 1.
Right now they have meals for:
- diabetic
- gluten intolerant
- Kosher
- Muslim
- vegan
…which can be ordered up to 24 hours in advance of a flight.

…not a special meal. 🙂
Beginning July 1, American will expand the offering to include:
- Hindu meal
- Asian Vegetarian meal
- Low Fat/Low Cholesterol meal
- Lacto-Ovo meal
- Low Sodium meal
- Non-lactose meal
- Baby’s meal
- Child’s meal
- Bland Meal
Here’s where you can order a special meal:
First and Business Class on nonstop flights between:
- New York Kennedy (JFK) – Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO)
- Miami (MIA) – Los Angeles (LAX)
- All Hawaii and Domestic Long Haul over 2200 miles
All classes to/from:
- Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand
- Belo Horizonte (CNF), Brasilia (BSB), Rio de Janeiro (GIG), Sao Paulo (GRU) Brazil
- Buenos Aires (EZE) Argentina
- Santiago (SCL), Chile
- Montevideo (MVD) Uruguay
This is an improvement for those customers that require these forms of meals.
