Via an internal release, American is soon imposing a restriction on checking Smart bags with built in batteries, effective January 15. The long story short – if the battery can’t be removed, you won’t be able to bring it onboard.




Luckily I don’t have a smart bag, but I know many of you do. Sometimes it pays to have the non fancy luggage, as this will certainly be a pain having to prove the battery can be removed, etc.

This really defeats the intended purpose of the builtin Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, RFID technology which is often designed to help a passenger locate his own luggage.
