Beginning February 1, 2018, American will be installing placards on overhead bins throughout the aircraft to denote dedicated areas for luggage storage.
New labels will be installed to reserve overhead bin space for:
- Main Cabin Extra seats
- First/Business Class seats
- Premium Economy seats
- Flagship Business seats
- Flagship First seats

What’s important to note here is that flight attendant’s will not be required to monitor usage of these overhead bins, so there really isn’t anything to prevent anyone from stowing their bag up top who doesn’t belong in that section. That said, as folks walk down the aisle and see the new labels I suspect they’ll be less likely to stick their bag in any old bin, thus leaving more space for the premium passengers in those sections.
Along with the new placards, new red stripes will be installed on Main Cabin Extra seats for better identification.
