British Airways will soon be discontinuing flights to Sri Lanka, effective March 29, 2015. Passengers booked after this date will receive a full refund. Because of the move, the Maldives will now only see seasonal service to London Gatwick. This seasonal service will only operate during the winter, to accommodate the high amount of leisure travelers who visit the tropical paradise. Previously, British Airways operated service from Colombo to the Maldives.
According to British Airways:
“The decision to suspend flights between Colombo and London has been a difficult one to make. We constantly assess all our global routes and take appropriate steps, as needed. The Colombo route is not making a profitable contribution to our business and we are unable to sustain it,”
Once British Airways pulls out, the only remaining carrier offering non-stop service from Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom will be Sri Lankan Airlines.
