Lately, I’ve been fascinated with the mechanics behind aviation – certainly, I’m no physicist or mechanical engineer, so I like to find things that give a layman’s perspective. So, let’s take a look at how the autopilot feature works.
KLM has come out with a neat series of videos highlighting some of the most wondered aspects of aviation. Here, KLM Captain van Dorst explains how autopilot works on a flight from Amsterdam to London.
To be honest, I didn’t realize there was that much human intervention. Pilots have to be on their a-game to make autopilot work, and by no means does it allow pilots to go on break for the remainder of the flight. Simply, it’s an aid to make their jobs easier, but not do their jobs for them.
