A $25 Free Uber Credit That Isn’t Free

March 10, 2015 by James Larounis 4 Comments

Get award booking help and personalized travel assistance for as little as $1 a month!

Several weeks ago, VNAFlyer reported to View from the Wing a $25 free credit for existing Uber users, that could be applied to your account for a $25 discount off an an Uber ride. Knowing many people applied the same code to their accounts, I wanted to do a follow up post on my experience using it.

After applying the code, and receiving confirmation that it had been applied to my account, and I was thrilled to see it go through successfully.

I took an Uber ride from the Hyatt Mission Bay to the San Diego Airport, and because of surge pricing, the ride totaled $38.

Thinking I had a $25 credit, and not seeing it applied in the final receipt, I emailed Uber for assistance. This was their reply:

After looking up the code further, it appears there are several restrictions in place:

  • It truly is $25 Off Your Ride, even for existing customers.
  • It’s valid in Canada only.
  • It’s for For Rogers customers only.
  • It Expires March 31, 2015.

So, if you live in the US and got it on this code, and took an Uber trip within the US and didn’t receive the discount, that’s why. Hope this helps!

PS – As a side note, thanks to Gary and VNA Flyer for reporting this, even though it turned out the code had limited application, It still helps many folks in the north, and it still always kind to share details of potential promotions! Sometimes details aren’t learned until later on, which is more than understandable.

So, you failed to read all the terms of the offer you signed up for and assumed it would be “free,” and now post this under a misleading headline that implies Uber is doing something wrong. That is pure clickbait. The fact is, the credit IS free…if you meet the terms.

For what its worth, I looked at the credit in my account after applying the promo code and don’t remember seeing the terms attached that are now clearly listed. Possible they added the terms after the fact or simply wrote the terms put for clarity at some later point.

Fair enough, but I still think the headline is clickbait. It plays on the whole “Uber is screwing you” emotion, when in reality the credit is free as long as the terms are met. I’m just seeing more and more of these types of headlines on forums like Boarding Area and P2B…gets tedious and detracts from all the actually useful posts I know the bloggers are capable of.

Seth, this is what I saw too. It wasn’t there when I initially loaded it, but those terms were added sometime since then.
