This weekend was my first rental with Silvercar, now that they’ve lowered the rental age limit to those under 25.
I rented the car from the Los Angeles location, and am really happy with how things turned out, going so far to say that this was the best rental car experience ever.
Silvercar is only located in the following locations, but they’re expanding quickly: Austin, Dallas Love Field, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, Phoenix, San Fransisco, Denver, Ft. Lauderdale and soon to be Chicago.
Once I Landed
When I landed in LAX, I opened up the Silvercar app which had be text them to let them know I had arrived. From there, I was presented with two options to get to the Silvercar building – either take a free shuttle bus to Lot C, where a representative would meet me, or let them know where I was at the terminal, and someone would get me there. Being especially crowded in the terminal, I decided to take the free shuttle to Lot C, which departs every 15 minutes, and is about a 5 minute journey. From there, a representative from Silvercar was there within a matter of minutes in an Audi A4, and picked me up to take me to the headquarters building. It was a very painless process, and it’s worth noting that they’re trying to phase out the Lot C pickup, and encourage customers just to meet the driver at the terminal at baggage claim. Easy enough.
Once at Silvercar
The journey to the Silvercar building took maybe 5 minutes at most, and we pulled inside where a line of vehicles was waiting. I opened up my app, presented my driver’s license and credit card for verification, and walked around the vehicle to do a damage check with the Silvercar representative. All in all, we were done in maybe three minutes tops. I placed my luggage into my vehicle and was given the go ahead to head out and begin my rental.
The Vehicle
Silvercar only rents Audi A4s, a high-end, luxury sedan. Each vehicle is equipped with free wifi, Serius XM satellite radio, leather seating, navigation and all the traditional bells and whistles. You’re also able to have Silvercar fill your vehicle up at the market price for only a $5 fee – which is convenient if you’re running late.
I really like how you can connect your smartphone to the vehicle to listen to music and take phone calls. I set mine up quickly and used it throughout my rental. I did have trouble connecting to the wifi signal during the first few hours, but I fired off a tweet to Silvercar and they reset the car’s SIM card within a half hour – from that point on, it was in working condition, so not sure what went wrong to begin with.
Returning the Car
When I returned the car, I pulled into the Silvercar lot, to be greeted by an agent outside. He scanned my vehicle in, did a quick cursory look for damage, and then noted the gas level, to which I was charged the appropriate refill amount. I was told to keep my luggage in the car as it was, and he drove me directly to the airport, dropping me off at American’s ticketing area for my flight – literally door to door service.
