Effective July 1, prices for wine and liquor drinks in the Main Cabin on American Airlines will be going up to $8, which matches what other legacy carriers are charging.

Here’s what’s on offer:

American will also be replacing the chips in their hummus and pita chip packs, to a veggie chip offering , better in-line with consumer requests.

I’ve got no issue with AA charging whatever the market will accept. However, there is no market at 36,000 feet. The price is whatever AA says it is and its against the law to bring your own. I say its time we change the rules. Let the sundry shops and newsstands in the airports sell single serving bottles of wine, liquor and beer so that passengers can choose to buy from them or up in the air. A can of Bud at the grocer story costs about 75 cents by the case. Is a 10x markup to $8 unreasonable? I think so. I’d gladly pay the newsstand guy $4. They do this in Grand Central Station and Penn Station for commuters on the trains. Seems to work just fine.

  I agree in principle, but in reality, FAs need to be able to cut people off, and that’s hard to do with personal alcohol. If someone is wasted at 35,000 feet, they are a danger not only to themselves, but to others.
